Name selection and branding. Check out the Air Guitar USA site for ideas. Some people play off existing bands, artists, and songs, while others choose more subtle variations for their stage persona. Fans of 2007 U.S. national winner William Ocean waved signs with his motto "Ride the Wave" during his performance. Come to think of it, they waved those signs during other contestants' performances too. It always helps to have an entourage.

Song selection. In the regional, national, and international championships, contestants should be prepared to perform twice. The first song is a song of your choice, while the second song is determined by the organizers (only the top 10 performers move on to the second round). Many competitors will splice together guitar solos from a song, or from multiple songs, into a 60-second performance clip. Popular songs tend to work up the crowd, while obscure songs can fall flat. You can start from anywhere in a song, not just the beginning. Try to include different parts, so that your routine is varied. Read the rules on the website before putting together your song.

Mental preparation. Rent "Air Guitar Nation" and study C-Diddy's and Bjorn Turoque's moves. Visit the U.S. Air Guitar website (link in Resources below) and watch videos of past winners. Read Bjorn Turoque's memoir "To Air Is Human" for ideas and tips. Regional championships are held in various cities throughout the U.S. during the summer. The regional winners complete at the U.S. national championships (which rotates cities each summer), and the U.S. national winner competes in the international/world air guitar championships in Oulu, Finland in August. You can find performances of the international competitors on YouTube.
